So, I'm trying to get rid of these ridiculous gnats that have been flying around our heads for the last couple weeks. They like smelly food, they like smelly trash, they're attracted to things that rot. We don't have any of those things in this house, I assure you, but they're also attracted to over-watered plants, which we probably have. It's hard to switch your plant-watering habits when you move from a relatively dry area to an area that has no shortage of wet. So I probably over-water, inviting all the neighborhood gnats to come partake in the bounty.
I read this and decided to try the apple cider vinegar route. I went to the store and bought a large jug of the stuff, poked holes in some jars and put these vinegar-filled holey jars all over the house, especially in the window sill where I believe the offending over-watered plants reside. This sill happens to be right by my desk.
Two problems already: besides the fact that it looks like I collect dark pee in jars and display it like modern art, watching these flies try to get into the jars is fascinating. I just stare and stare and stare, hoping one will work its way in and be TRAPPED FOR LIFE. I even cheer them on. It reminds me of the episode of The Office in which they are having a staff meeting in the conference room and the screen saver on the video display is a box that bounces around the screen. The entire staff watches the box, hoping it will hit the corner of the screen dead-on. The boss takes their groans and cheers as participation in what he's saying, but they're not listening - oh no - they're hoping the little box will hit the corner. Like I hope the little gnats will find their way into the tiny holes and DROWN IN VINEGAR. Looks like it's working! ;)
